Ice Damning
Solve Ice Damning before the Winter
Ice Damming causes a laundry list of problems, not only from the ice itself causing damage but the root cause of ice damming is inside your home wreaking havoc. Ice damming is caused by heat loss in the home, typically the attic but can also happen around windows and doors. If your windows are a problem, that's a fairly easy fix, just replace the windows.
When you've noticed water dripping in the home, ice damming or icicles on your roof, the problem is a lack of insulation and inadequate ventilation.
Section 1: Standard Ceilings the fix can be quite simple.
We need to check your Attic Insulation. As of November 2016, the Alberta Building Code has changed, stating that homes require an insulation value of R50.
If you have less than R50, the Government will rebate you some of your funds to upgrade your insulation to R50.
Next is the Ventilation. Do you have adequate attic ventilation? If not we will install proper ventilation to ensure your roof has adequate air flow.
Soffit Ventilation. This is the area of your roof where there is the air intake. Without adequate air intake, the roof will not be able to let air escape. (Many older homes have solid plywood soffit, which doesn't allow the roof to intake air.) Weatherproof Roofing can replace this wood with the perforated aluminum soffit.
Section 2: Vaulted Ceilings there is only one solution.
It's still the same problem, not enough insulation/ventilation.
The problem is that many vaulted ceiling's attic spaces are very limited in size. This makes it impossible to use a traditional blown in or bat insulation to achieve R50 while still having space for airflow in the attic.
For a vaulted ceiling, this requires a spray foam insulation. Spray foam insulation acts as a vapor barrier and achieves a rating of R50 with only 7 inches of space. This will leave space in your attic for air flow.
Attic Ventilation for vaulted ceilings: If there is no cavity in your attic, then your roof requires Ridge Venting, this is the only way to vent the entire attic.
Sometimes with homes with vaulted ceilings, especially if they are older, can have a very small overhang, leaving one to wonder where will the soffit venting be installed? For this problem we will install intake vents at the base of your roof in order to achieve air intake.
If you have ice problems, or leaks inside your home during the winter, inadequate insulation and ventilation is your problem. Have Weatherproof Roofing come out and give you a free Quote to correct these problems.

If your roof is leaking it is commonly thought to be the external material, which is often true as the shingles may have deteriorated or the flashings were not installed properly. There are also problems which are not external but are also part of your roof. Ventilation and Insulation play a large roll in the functionality of your roof. If you notice leaking in the winter, often times it is because inadequate insulation and/or ventilation has promoted condensation in your attic, once the condensation builds up or thaws it will begin to drip.
Weatherproof Roofing is experienced with a large variety of roof repairs. If you're in the Edmonton area and are in need of a roof repair contact Weatherproof Roofing, and have us take care of your roof.
Leaking Roof and Attic Frost
The Dreaded Attic Rain
With temperatures dipping below zero degrees, you may have noticed a little bit of leaking around pot lights, exhaust fans or a leaking skylight. If you only see this leaking in the winter time, chances are you have 'attic rain', or most commonly known as moisture in your attic.
You may be wondering how moisture gets into your attic if it’s not through the roof itself?
Moisture gets into your attic by heat escaping through your insulation. Many attics have inadequate insulation to keep the heat inside the home. In Edmonton before November 2016, the code requirements for attic insulation stipulated that insulations had to have a value of R40, since that time the requirement has risen to a minimum of R50. This means if your home was built before November 2016, most likely your attic has inadequate insulation.
Second is the ventilation, some heat may get into the attic, but proper ventilation must be present to keep air flow. This is where your soffit comes into play. The soffit is the perforated metal that finishes the underneath of the roof’s overhang. The soffit is where the air is drawn into the attic and the vents on the rooftop suck the air out. Adequate soffit venting and rooftop venting are critical to the life of your roof, and to keep moisture out.
In many cases, there may be no signs of leaking for many years and then every little bit there is some brown staining around pot lights, skylights, chimneys, fan vents and any other penetration in your ceiling. What has happened is if you had insulation with a value of R40 or less, a tiny bit of heat is escaping into your attic. When we have extremely cold temperatures, the warm air freezes in the cold attic with some accumulation. As the temperatures warm up, the water drips down onto the insulation, because it is such a small amount, you may not notice any leaking. Every time water gets into your insulation and then dries, the insulation becomes more compact, causing it to lose its R value. You may have started out with R40, but as the years have gone by it has decreased slowly. The leaks may have become more prevalent and the insulation is either in need of a ‘top up’ or a total replacement. In most cases, it is just a ‘top up’ that is needed.

Solar Powered Opening Skylight
Welcome to the latest Innovation to 'Skylight' Technology!
Weatherproof Roofing proudly presents the Solar Powered Opening Skylight.
The roof in this video you are watching is in Edmonton and the job was completed in 2017. On this particular project, we Replaced the Asphalt Shingles with Limited Lifetime Architectural Laminate Shingles, in this case, Lifetime refers to 50-year full replacement Warranty. We also replaced the Fascia & Eavestrough as well as the Flashing on the Brick Chimney.
The exciting part of this Roof was the Replacement of One Large Skylight to 2 Skylights, with one being Solar Powered Opening Skylight. We also newly Installed a Sun Tunnel, which now allows a lot of Natural Light into a once dark Bathroom
The existing Skylight was a fixed Skylight, and replacing this with 2 Skylights required a little more work. Weatherproof Roofing Specializes in Skylight Replacement and Installation, thus the work went very smoothly, leaving a Smiling Client.
In order to Install 2 Skylights, we framed and built the roof deck in the existing Skylight opening, installing 2 curbs to mount the Skylights. We Installed a Fixed Curb Mount Skylight on the lower Skylight, and a Solar Powered Opening Skylight on the Upper Opening.
Solar Powered Opening Skylight is an amazing technology as there are many features which give peace of mind, as well as keeping costs low.
1. 99 Open/Closes:
The battery charges quickly within a few hours. A full charge will last for 99 Open & Closes, giving peace of mind knowing that you can go awhile without seeing the sun and still have a lot of power.
2. Wireless Remote Control:
Since the Skylight is Solar Powered, it charges a battery to open and close. There is no need for wires, and the Installation is as easy as a regular Skylight, which helps to keep costs down. The Wireless Remote Control allows you to set when you would like to Open and Close, so when you come home from work, the Skylight is already open, letting any hot air escape.
3. Rain Sensor
Worried about the rain? With the Rain Sensor you can have peace of mind knowing that if rain should happen while you are out and the Skylight is open, the Rain Sensor will signal the Skylight to close. It does this quite Quickly, as you would ideally want if it suddenly begins to Rain.
An Opening Skylight is great because when open, along with a window or door, it will create a terrific amount of airflow throughout your house, helping to keep it cool in the summer months. With fresh air being pulled through your house, and the comfort in knowing that Rain will not get into your house, a Solar Powered Skylight is a great addition to any home!
Last but Not Least was the New Addition of the Sun Tunnel. This is an effective way of bringing natural light into the home at a very inexpensive cost.

Skylight Replacement
Q : When should I have my Skylight Replaced? Should I wait until it starts leaking?
A : Your skylight should be replaced when your roofing system is replaced.
It is common to have a Skylight which is functioning properly but the Roofing System needs to be replaced.
At Weatherproof Roofing we commonly get calls from homeowners who have replaced their Roofing System within 1-3 years, but did not have their Skylight Replaced. Noticing leaking from or caused by the skylight, the skylight and surrounding roofing material must be replaced. Before the Roofing System was replaced the Skylight was functioning properly with no signs of leaking, so what is the cause of the leaking?
There can be a few different reasons for this leaking.
The metal flashing surrounding the skylight is reused, leaving holes in the flashing which can cause leaking.
If the skylight is removed to replace the metal flashing, then reinstalled, the skylight can have easily suffered damages to the integrity of the seals used originally to build the skylight.
The metal flashing is damaged when the existing roofing system is removed, which can lead it to falter.
If you are a homeowner that is in this particular situation, have no fear, Weatherproof Roofing can handle all of your Skylight Replacement needs in Edmonton and Area.
Save Money Replacing Your Skylight
A Skylight is a part of the Roofing System, to Save Money have your Skylight Replaced when having the Roofing System Replaced. This saves money as it is more efficient to replace the Skylight while the Roofing Material is off vs Replacing the Skylight after the Roofing System is installed.
Have Weatherproof Roofing handle all of your Skylight Replacement and Roof Replacement Needs.
Limited Lifetime Asphalt Shingles
The year is 2016 and technology is constantly improving, helping figure out ways we can save our precious time and money. When it comes to replacing your Asphalt Shingles have Weatherproof's knowledgable staff introduce the new technology in Asphalt Shingles. The advances of Laminated Asphalt Shingles have increased colour and life, with various shingles offering Limited Lifetime Warranties, where Lifetime is a term for 50 + years. Asphalt Shingles have advanced in technology and thus have increased in value. Now a reasonable priced roofing system will last a Lifetime.
The Existing Asphalt Shingles
This particular home has a 10 / 12 pitch, meaning the slope is at 37.5 Degrees. The existing roofing system did not have underlayment on the roof deck underneath the shingles and was not adequately vented. The existing Asphalt Shingles failed after 17 years due to ice damning caused by improper ventilation and the absence of an underlayment to protect the shingles from the ions that can be released from the glues to hold plywood together. Without proper ventilation any heat that gets into the attic has no route to escape, causing snow to melt and become water. This water then becomes ice in colder temperatures, ice damning causes water to back up the roof creating leaks, as well as water can get underneath the shingles promoting deterioration in the shingles.
The New Asphalt Shingles
The new Roofing System, has an Ice and Water Shield membrane applied to 44" along the eaves and valleys of the roof deck. A Metal Drip Edge is then applied to the roof deck along the eaves of the roof to protect the edge of the roof deck from any water damage. The remaining exposed roof deck is then entirely covered with synthetic underlayment to protect the shingles from the ions that can released from the adhesives in the wood that are harmful to the Asphalt Shingles.
Adequate Ventilation
With new ventilation holes cut in the roof deck, and ridge ventilation cut in where the interior is vaulted ceiling, the roof is now Certified by BP and has an extended 50 year warranty.
Weatherproof Roofing is here to handle any Roof Replacement, Skylight, and Roof Repair needs that you may have.
Saving Your Chimney
Chimneys are a common problem spot that can cause leaking water to enter your attic and your home. Causing multiple problems such as, rotten wood, insulation and drywall. Water that can get to your foundation will freeze and thaw promoting cracks in your foundation.
The question is why is my chimney leaking? "We just had a Roof Replacement"
Although you may have just had your roofing product changed on your roof, sometimes the entire roofing system is not properly assessed, and corrective solutions aren't always given as some try to save money. This only leads to future costs, and depending when the damage is fixed, the bill continues to grow with neglect.
The Chimney is usually installed when the house is built, and flashing is used to intertwine the Asphalt Shingles or Cedar Shakes to the chimney, making water impenetrable.
The issue comes when the roofing system is changed, and flashing is reused, leaving old nail holes, as well as wear and tear to the flashing, causing it to lose its integrity, resulting in leaks.
There is a conception that roof tar will solve the issues. As you see in the pictures of this chimney, roofing tar was used to try and seal the chimney, but it was unsuccessful and leaked into the house
Re-Flashing Chimneys are our Specialty
When having your roof replacement done, it is best to have the chimney flashing changed as well, that way leaking water will not be an issue.
If you have had your roof replacement done, but the chimney flashing was reused and now finding out the chimney is leaking. No problem, Weatherproof Roofing can help.
We remove old worn shingles around chimney, apply Ice and Water Membrane protection, and properly flash, shingle and counter flash your chimney. Have peace of mind knowing that your chimney is watertight.

How To Check Your Roof For Hail Damage
Hail storms happen pretty infrequently in the Edmonton area, but when they do occur they can be intense and have the ability to cause lots of damage to your home.
Hail forms when large thunderstorm updrafts carry rain up into the freezing level of the atmosphere. Once the rain has frozen these small pellets of ice can grow further which additional water freezes to them. They they can start plummeting to the ground very quickly and if they make contact with your home, your roof and other items they can cause a lot of damage.
Typically, because your roof is the highest part of your home, it becomes the part that is most at risk of hail damage.
Here are just some of the more common problems that hail damage in Edmonton can cause:
Puncture Wounds
Water Leaks
Structural Damage
Dented Metal and Plastic
Sometimes it is hard to know if it actually hailed during a thunderstorm, but you should be able to see signs of it around your home. One of the best ways to tell if your Edmonton home has been affected by hail damage is to look around for signs of dented metal.
Check Your Roof For Damage
You will be able to tell if hail damage has occurred on metal as there will be noticeable dents where the hail pellets have hit repeatedly.
This type of damage can be a problem if your home has a metal roof or carport, but is also the easiest type of hail damage to repair.
If you are standing on the ground you are unlikely to be able to see the top of your roof, but that is the part that is most at risk of hail damage.
Even small hail pellets can create puncture wounds in your shingle roof, which may lead of holes and water leaking into your home in the future. It is wise to repair these issues now so you aren’t spending loads of money later on future repairs and replacement services.
Look for signs that your shingles are missing, have no granules left or are starting to wear away after a large hail storm. If these things occur, then your are running the risk of water entering your home next time it rains.
