Is Your Roof Fall-Ready?

As summer nears its end, It’s time to start thinking about preparing your home for fall. In particular, turn your attention to your roof: rain, snow, and strong winds can all cause a roof that already has some minor damage to suffer a leak. It’s always better to prevent problems, but it’s especially important to avoid the need for a roof repair in the fall when adverse weather conditions could make this much more challenging, if not impossible. There are certain things to look out for to ensure your roof is ready for fall.

1. Obvious Damage

Use a ladder to check your roof up close. Look for signs of damage to the shingles and flashing, any indications of rot, mold, or leaks, and missing shingles. Since it’s unsafe to climb on your roof yourself, you should ask a roofing contractor for an inspection if you suspect any damage.

2. Moss on the Shingles

You may think that you only need to clear moss from shingles for appearances. In fact, moss can damage your roof, such as by pulling off shingles or retaining moisture that can cause asphalt to corrode or wood to rot.

3. Signs of Pest Infestation

Termites and other pests can impact the structural integrity of your roof. If you believe you may have a pest infestation, you first need a pest control service to treat your roof and then a roofer to make the necessary repairs.

4. Sagging Gutters

It’s important to clean your gutters from leaves and other debris before the fall. Otherwise, blocked gutters could accumulate water and overflow. Worse, low temperatures can cause water to freeze, causing your gutters to fall off, taking part of the roof with them. If your gutters ever start to sag, they’re likely blocked and require prompt attention.

5. Position of Your Downspouts

Make sure your downspouts are draining water into an appropriate location, such as downhill or perhaps into a rainwater collection system. If they have shifted position, they may cause water to pool around your house or your neighbour’s house.

6. Inspect Your Chimney

Receive a chimney inspection to look for obstructions. It’s crucial you do this before you light your first fire in the fall.
