How to Keep Your Skylight Clean
To make the most of your skylight, you need to keep it clean. This will ensure the maximum amount of sunlight is able to illuminate your home, and you’ll maintain appearances inside and out. However, cleaning skylights can be intimidating because they tend to be difficult to reach. With these simple tips, you’ll be able to keep your skylight clean all year round.
Cleaning Skylights from the Inside
Start by removing any furniture and other items underneath your skylight. It’s also worth laying down a tarp to collect dust and debris that falls from the skylight and to prevent splashes making the floor wet. To reach the skylight, use either a mop or a cleaning rag tied to a pole. Soak the rag or mop in a bucket of warm water with a little dish soap and then squeeze it out. Carefully clean the glass using sweeping or circular motions.
If the above doesn’t remove all the stains from the window, use a solution made from one part vinegar, two parts water and repeat the above. Never use anything stronger than this, as you could damage the glass. Once you’ve removed all the dirt, dry the skylight with another mop or cleaning rag.
Cleaning the Outside of Your Skylight
Cleaning skylights from the outside is the more challenging part. You’ll need a ladder that enables you to reach the window safely, without you needing to lean out or climb onto the roof. Take up with you a dry rag and a sponge soaked in the same soapy water as before. Use the dry rag to brush away dust that has accumulated on the skylight. Then, wash the glass using straight horizontal and vertical movements with the sponge.
If you discover that your skylight has any tough stains caused by bird droppings or tree sap, return to the ground and bring up a clean rag soaked in the water and vinegar solution. You’ll then need to clean the window again with soap to remove any residue. Finally, spray the skylight with a hose from ground level and allow the window to air dry.
While cleaning the skylight, you may notice that it has suffered some damage. Since this will be detrimental to your home’s insulation, it’s important to receive a skylight repair.
